Some things could distract Brendon easily, especially things that caught his attention, and especially things he liked. For example, when he was walking around the mall the previous weekend, he had spent at least thirty minutes staring at the cell phone case kiosk, trying to determine which color looked better- red or blue? In the end, he didn't get either. But the truth of that story is that he got distracted by trivial things easily... like the beautiful blue eyes that Mattie had. Brendon wished he had blue eyes, but his were a dull hazel color. Staring into Mattie's eyes reminded him of the ocean. Realizing he must have been staring, Brendon cleared his throat and looked down to his coffee cup once more.
"Not so much history. I write music, and play music, and if I feel up to it, I'll sing music too." he explained softly, giving his coffee a stir with a small spoon that was sitting beside him convieniently. "Sometimes I write for class, but most of the time, I write about my emotions, it helps me let it out..." Of course, there were other ways of letting out his emotions that he wasn't going to talk about with Mattie. Like for instance, the hundreds of criss-cross patterns scarring his arms. Cutting had been a childhood habit, and it never really went away, which explained why he always wore a hoodie. Music was his preffered release.
"So..." Brendon looked back up and caught eyes with him again, once again getting lost in their shine. Blue was his favorite color after all.

Mattie just smiled, the conversation was progressing quite nicely but the boy did seem distracted for a moment, just starring into his eyes as soon as he pulled his glasses off but mattie didn't mind, in fact he kind of liked the attention. the boy was attractive, he seemed nice enough and mattie had really been much too busy with his studies. his social life was lacking and it could use a new person helping it along so instead of pointing it out, mattie just shot him a smile, looking a little amused by his actions before the boy realized it and looked away. "That sounds like fun," mattie decided. writing music, playing it, it sounded pretty good to him but then he was sure it couldn't be as easy as that. one needed a lot of creativity and a decent muse to write anything good. "sounds like a good way to do that," mattie admitted. "do you have a lot to write about?," mattie asked. it was definitely a good way to express himself and although his question was left a little vague he was hoping for more details. It would give him a bit more of an insight into brendon and just what went on in his head. "yes?" he asked with a another smile as the boy looked into his eyes again seemingly locked in a stare but mattie didn't mind at all, he found it a little amusing and took the opportunity to be a little forward. "you know, usually when someone stares into my eyes this much, they end up asking me out or something," he told the boy with a smirk playing on his lips. he was only teasing him, trying to get some sort of reaction. mattie wouldn't mind doing the asking in this case as long as he saw this boy again.

"Oh yes, I write about everything. I write when I'm happy, I write when I'm sad, I write when I'm angry... when I'm lonely..." He didn't think much about what he was saying, that he was openly admitting he didn't have a lot of friends, because only someone with a very little social life would spend most of his time writing music. Then again, most of the best musicians spent most of their time writing music.
Suddenly, brendon was very embaressed. "Oh... oh, no, I just..." The boy was very attractive, and his eyes were fascinating, but he hadn't even thought about that, and most people weren't very open to sitting down with a homosexual student and having a casual conversation, considering gays weren't exactly the most popular thing. "I just really like the color of your eyes, that's all. Blue is my favorite color." He looked down, telling himself that he wouldn't look back up at his eyes again unless he had to, because he didn't want to seem weird.
Brendon realized that his coffee was almost gone, but he wanted more, he was addicted to the caffeinated substance. "I'm going to go get another... do you want anything?" He figured he would be nice, seeing as Mattie was being so nice to him.

Mattie just listened to the boy. it all seemed reasonable but that last one caught his attention. Mattie wasn't the most social person around, he was just about average most of the time but even he didn't suffer from loneliness too often. He wondered if this boy just kept to himself a lot of if there was another reason but he kept his thoughts to himself for now. Mattie's statement seemed to have caught him off guard but he had expected as much and now the boy was protesting. he was trying to cover the fact that he had been staring the way he had. mattie was sure he hadn't misread the signs. no straight boy wasn't going to stare into another guy's eyes, it just wasn't done. mattie didn't mind though, a few years ago he would have probably done the same just out of the embarrassment of being caught. mattie just smiled that friendly smile. "I don't mind," he told the boy, letting him know that it was okay to look up again instead of being so thoroughly focused on the boring table in front of him. So he liked the colour of his eyes. it was nice to hear. mattie quite liked his as well. the dark brown of it just drew him in more. mattie liked dark eyes, he always felt like there was more of a story behind them and it got him curious enough to want to get to know the person a little better. Mattie picked up his drink and sipped it as he leaned back in his seat. "no i'm fine, thank you," he told him. he still had his coffee and he had confined himself to having no more than a cup a day. he didn't need to rely too strongly on the stuff.

Brendon quickly excused himself to stand up and make his way back over to the counter. He was addicted to coffee, yes, but he also felt the need to take a breath and think for a moment. Did he really think Mattie was attractive? No doubt he was, but he couldn't let that show, no of course not. He had to keep every feeling of attraction bottled up inside him. What if someone caught him sitting down with another guy and immediantly started a rumor? It would be all over the campus that Brendon was on a "date" even though he was just talking with a perfect stranger. No, he couldn't let that happen. He sighed and took a deep breath, ordering another caramel mocha frap, and also gazing down at the sweets they had in the counter.
When Brendon returned he was holding two freshly baked blueberry muffins and an iced mocha frap, setting them down on the table and scooting one towards Mattie. "I know you said you didn't want anything, but I got you one anyway." he said with a small chuckle. His bangs fell down into his eyes a little as he took a bite of his own, he loved how he could eat and eat and never gain a pound. Fast metabolisms worked wonders.

mattie wasn't usually the type to be too presumptuous but he was sure he knew what was going on here. usually he would sit back and take things slow but there was just something about this boy that was familiar. had he used to be like that? so eager to pretend he wasn't interested in someone? mattie remember those days when he doubted himself just a bit and didn't want to have it be too obvious if he even thought that someone was a little attractive. was that what was happening here? mattie was sure he saw the signs but could he be wrong? perhaps. there was always that chance. mattie decided then to just sit back and not let himself even think about flirting with this boy but all that went out the window when he returned and spoke. mattie tried to stifle the grin that was forming on his lips but failed miserably. how sweet he was, getting him a muffin. that was not something a straight guy would do, no matter how nice he was. so then mattie was sure he was right. perhaps the boy just didn't like the forwardness. he smiled, deciding to tone it down a bit if he could. "merci," he said, thanking the boy for the muffin, the grin still as relentless as it had ever been. this was ridiculous but mattie couldn't help himself. he was just sitting there grinning like an idiot and he knew he probably owed brendone an explaination. "that was probably the sweetest thing anyone's done for me in a while," he admitted, waiting to see just what the boy would think of that. he assumed that he was brush it off, say it was nothing or simply change the topic but mattie would wait to see. all he did was get him a muffin after all. it wasn't a big deal but mattie appreciated the gesture.

Brendon was relieved when Mattie said a simple "merci", which sounded even better than a "thanks" from anyone, maybe it was just because he spoke in a smooth french accent. As he continued to nibble more at his muffin, he watched part his lips again and say it was very sweet of him. Sweet? Was he supposed to be being sweet? Brendon tried to be polite, but did that tie over to sweet too? "Oh, uhm, you're welcome." he said, quickly and casually, trying to play it off. Trying to sound like it didn't phase him.
Mattie continued, and Brendon took a dangerous peek back at his perfect blue eyes. As expected, he got lost in them once again, and a small smile tugged at the corner of his lips. "Really? The sweetest thing? I doubt it." After all, it was only a muffin. It wasn't like Brendon bought him a hundred dollars worth of candy or a giant teddy bear that says "I love you!" It was only a muffin.
So why was he getting that nervous tingling inside of his stomach? The teen settled back in his seat after gazing away from Mattie, crossing his arms over his slender stomach. "It was just like, one fifty. Don't sweat." He didn't normally talk like that either, but he was pulling it off, playing it cool, sounding like he didn't care, and that maybe he was just a little bipolar, or something.
Brendon wasn't bipolar. He was just good at pretending.

when brendon said 'your welcome', mattie just smiled and considered the fact that he might need to enact a plan here. peeling back a piece of the muffin, he ate it and looked out the window in thought. he was never very good at this sort of thing. it didn't take long for him to decide to just go with the flow and see what happens; turning back, he smiled when he got eye contact again. "Well, not many people have done much so.. it is, it's true," mattie admitted. it was still a very nice gesture and as they say, it's the thought that counts and the thought was definitely there with that one. perhaps an actual plan wasn't essential in this case. it was just that mattie thought things through too thoroughly, especially when it came to his work but this wasn't work. this was just a nice guy he was talking to and so far it was going quite well. mattie laughed when he spoke though. "it's not that brendon. it's the thought," mattie told him with that same smile as he ate another piece of the muffin. he looked as though he were thinking for a moment before speaking again, "now that you've done that.. I'm going to have to do something too," he said, he didn't really have to do anything at all but it was a good excuse to. perhaps he could ask him out to dinner as a reply to this sweet gesture... yes, perfect! "how about i take you out to dinner this weekend?" he asked, looking back at him, bright blue eyes daring him to just accept.

Brendon thought he was pulling off the "laid back" attitude fine, but apparently not fine enough. Mattie was so much more of a natural, so much better than his fake smiles, trying to prove that he could be chill too. Except he could not be calm, his hands were trembling and he wondered for a moment, what would Mattie think if he knew Brendon was gay? Sure, he had never had a real relationship before, but he was pretty sure he was gay. He didn't like girls, he liked boys. It was that simple. If Mattie knew, would he get up and walk out of his life like so many others before him? Hell, he couldn't blame him.
But Mattie's next words made Brendon think even harder. He was offering to take him out to dinner? Wasn't that something that couples did? The teenager cleared his throat and paused for a moment, staring at Mattie's face, as if to check if he had heard him correctly or not. "Dinner?" he echoed. "As in, a sit down resteraunt?" When was the last time he had gone to a resteraunt? Not in a long, long time. Was Mattie just being nice?
"I... I'd love to." he answered finally with more confidence, and that perfect smile appeared on his lips again. "Thank you so much. It's a little much for a muffin though, will you let me pay? Maybe he was overestimating Mattie's intentions. Maybe he just meant it as friends, but still, it perked Brendon's interest.

this was a good looking boy, exactly his type and he was just sitting there looking so sweet and innocent that mattie just couldn't help but go out of his way to ensure that he would see more of this boy. mattie had to resort to bitting his lower lip in order to avoid a big grin at just how adorable this individual was being. brendon just stared at him like he was in shock and mattie couldn't help but think it was cute. mattie just raised an eyebrow when the boy appeared to need confirmation. "unless you'd prefer to stand and eat," he joked with a smirk. yes, dinner generally included a table with chairs at a nice restaurant where they would share a meal together.. It was pretty standard stuff but the boy seemed to need a moment to process which was fine with mattie. he remember being on the other side of this and he remember what that was like so he give brendon his moment for it to sink it. it wasn't long before he accepted and mattie smiled again. good, things were going quite nicely. picking up his drink, he sipped it again. the warm liquid was well on its way to room temperature but mattie didn't mind too much. he was his own fault for forgetting it and he had a lot of practice drinking cold mocha lattes anyway. "no," mattie said, though he still had that smile on his face. "I've asked you out so you're not allowed to even think about that," he informed him, sounding perfectly confidant and certain about the rules but friendly as well. besides, mattie was just glad he had a date to begin with. it had been far too long since the last one and the guy needed to get out and live life a bit.
