society understood the parker's to be righteous and moral, living their life within the boundaries of the law and the rules, ready to spit upon those that dared step outside the lines. their prim and proper manners earned the respect of the neighborhood, and in the small town that they lived in, they were high-class and like-able, a family of nine who were the pride and joy of the town. the parkers had seven kids, and shay was their last - word around town was that shay had been an 'accident', an unplanned pregnancy that took place when her mother was a little bit too old to carry another child, and in the end her mother died during childbirth, trying to push out a baby that was three days too late. her brothers often whispered - out of earshot of her father - that she was a rebel from the start, unwilling to come out and face the world, unwilling to do everything people asked of her. she was a pretty little creature, her brown eyes the mirror of her perfect innocence, her laughter pure and joyous. though the death of the mother - the one woman in the family - was harsh upon the rest of the family, the happiness that shay provided by being a bundle of joy more than made up for it. when her little fingers curled around one of her fathers, she held on tight, her shrewd eyes watching him carefully, and it was only when he smiled at her that she relaxed her grip, giggling as she cuddled in next to him. she was a wonderful baby, even though she did make quite the fuss when people tried to dress her up or attempted to make her do something she wasn't willing to.
maybe it was because she was the last of her mom's that her father was willing to spoil her rotten. the family lived on a decent budget, but to the boys it appeared that their father was showering little shay with more gifts than they did to any of the others. what was remarkable was that the little tyke didn't want any gifts - she would discard them as soon as they were handed to her and lift up her arms imploringly, for there was nothing that shay liked better than to be cuddled. it was nuisance for the brothers that were then in college, but none of them could resist her once she turned her large brown eyes upon them. the family was overprotective of her, her brothers treating her like a queen. she had six of them - daniel, twelve, was the oldest, followed by nathaniel, samnuel, william, lucas, and joseph. they were each eleven, nine, eight, seven, and six in descending order. she was the most fond of william, or 'liam' who suffered from autism, and kept to himself most of the time. though he pretty much went berserk if anyone else stepped into his room, liam had a soft spot for shay, and didn't mind her at all. perhaps shay instinctively felt liam was the one that needed love the most, because she hardly was with anybody else when he was in the room, and the household learnt to respect her wishes and judgement from when she was a baby. it appeared that everyone in the household revolved around her.
she was a delight to the eyes of everyone that beheld her, and when she started to show an interest in gymnastic at the age of six, her father enrolled her in a class so that she could practice it better. shay had been whimsical in the past, never sticking with one thing to make her happy, but it was apparent she had found her calling in gymnastics. but then her father lost his job in the plantation he had been working in two years later, and he could no longer afford to send her to classes. this was the least of the family's worries, however - shayne parker had to clothe and feed seven hungry mouths at home, too, as well as pay for their education. shay was unaware of how terrible things had become until her twenty one year old brother dropped out of college to help the family, working in a garage in the neighborhood so that there would be food on the table for the parkers.
they lived in a small town, where people talked - they said to your face what they weren't saying behind your back, as they added fuel to every rumor they heard, passing it along to each other, whispering, pointing, gossiping. the parkers found themselves to be the main talk of the town once mr parker had lost his job and his oldest kid had quit school, but through the burning shame they survived. the family became closer knit together, taking pleasure in each others company, and nights were spent on the kitchen floor where the boys lay around little shay, who held court like a proper little queen would. they started to go hungry at least twice every week, but the boys always made sure that shay was well fed by giving her any food they could spare. the neighbors, who had once been so welcoming and kind to the family, now wouldn't accept the parkers playing with their kids, and shay found that school was no different. the kids at school, who had yet to learn the art of speaking about each other behind the other's back, talked openly about shay and her family, and shay began to spend more and more time alone. she became timid, letting her self esteem fall, hiding away in the corners of her classroom, unwilling to lift up her face and make eye contact with any one. only in the presence of teachers did she feel comfortable, and she began to join them in the classrooms, and the teachers, finding her thirst for knowledge refreshing, were happy to help her out and give her extra assignments to work on, because she was a special kid, and a bright one at that. they never caught on that shay spent time with them to avoid the other children in class.
all that changed when she started middle school, and instead of seeking attention she started demanding it with a new set of wardrobe she had designed herself over the summer, working seamlessly at the tailoring machine until she had made one perfect pair of clothe after another. she was quite the talented little thing when it came to sewing, and she was the one to mend and make new the hand-me-down clothes passed down in the family. her father was hired for a job at a construction company, but by then two of her brothers were already working their butts off to get the family money needed to keep them going. the parkers had one too many kids, the neighbors whispered, thats why the loss of one job cost them so much. but each and everyone of the members in her family were determined to make sure that shay never suffered the consequences of such, but shay was a sensible girl and knew not to ask for things that her family could not afford. she was headstrong and independent, and though the family relied heavy on each other, shay also knew not to depend on them too much.
at school she became a social monster compared to the shay that she had been, and was soon one of the most popular girls in school. she had quite the group of friends whom she wasn't particularly close with but hung out with on a daily basis, and dated the cutest guys in middle school and was also daring enough to date older boys in high schools. at home she was tame, soft-spoken and quiet, but at school she explored the parts of her personality that had lain dormant since her father lost his job. she joined the middle school cheerleading squad and because of her prior interest in gymnastics, she found she was quite the superb cheerleader. she was chosen as co-captain for the cheerleading squad in her sophomore year, and was even down to be the captain the following year, but tragedy struck at a pool party she attended when she got a little hot and heavy with her boyfriend and ended up getting pregnant. she dropped out of the squad and completed the next three and a half months of school, and made up an excuse of not going to summer camp by insisting she needed to stay and help out with the family. it wasn't until she was rushed to the hospital at the end of the summer to give birth to her baby that the town found out why the talk of the town had dropped off the face of the earth. her father had convinced her to give the baby up for adoption because they could not afford to have another baby and she was not fit to take care of one at such a young age, so the baby was taken away from her before she even got to see his face, something she has noted down as one of the worst memories of her life.
after the baby, the family found it impossible to live in the town where everyone talked about the parker girl who had a baby out of wedlock. her father lost his job after her taught one of his co-workers a lesson for bad-mouthing his daughter, and her brothers were getting into trouble for sticking up for shay by sticking their fist in people's mouths. it was apparant that the family needed to uproot itself and move to another town, and after much consideration shayne parker decided to do just that. there was no one the parkers said goodbye to, no one that came by to wish them well as they packed their belonging and left in their battered old family van. shay cried on the shoulders of liam through the whole journey, the shame she had brought on to the family lying heavy upon her shoulders. though her brothers assured her that it was not her fault, that she had no way of knowing, she knew her father blamed her, for he couldn't make eye contact with her. but she was determined to be strong and hold her head high, and after enrolling in bouscher academy of the arts, she went back to her flamboyant personality, being a rebellious skeptic who loves to do things that are a little unexpected. she doesn't care less of what others opinion of hers is, but her devil may care attitude is only restricted to those outside her family - beside her family she is thoughtful, kind and sincere, but once on the streets she becomes a completely different person. she is reserved and cautious, hesitant to open up to anybody, but she covers up the fact by talking about what others might find useless, such as celebrities and gossip and likewise. the only people she cares for is her family, who accepts her no matter what so she does things to her hearts desires, never skimping on how much fun she's having. she is not shy when it comes to guys and if there's a guy that interests her, she'd peruse him, but she would never get close enough to someone to develop a relationship - no, she's more of the one-night stand type of girl. she's a fiery little beast and she doesn't give a damn, and she's also quite the flirt. she might not be the most sociable creature in all of ehus island, but she isn't an ice-queen either, and people will find they get along with shay as long as they kept their noses out of her personal affairs and were in to have a good time.
