colby grew up, in a word, on the wrong side of the tracks. he spent most of his life protecting and caring for his younger sister, cambria (16) he's been on his own more or less since he could walk and talk and put top ramen in the microwave. his mother was a good woman, who worked hard and did her best to care for her family, but even at just twenty, which is how old she was when colby was born, she had lived a hard life and wasn't an affectionate, maternal type of woman, but she genuinely cared for her children.
still, as a result of being on his own for such a large part of his life, colby is a quiet, brooding sort of person. he mostly keeps to himself, and can come off as a real douche bag. truly, he's got a good heart, but having spent most of his life trying to keep people from stealing what little they had or fending off the approaches of men who wanted to paw his baby sister, he doesn't relate very well to people, particularly the male gender. he is, however, fiercely protective of the females in his life, his sister first and foremost, and then his mother, but he has a naturally protective instinct for any girl he comes in contact with, whether he knows her or not.
when he was twelve, his mother married for the first time in her life. his father had never married the woman and had disappeared not long after merletta got pregnant with cambria, and hasn't been heard from since. not so much as a child support check, and no one's been able to find him. suspicions are high that he's either left the country entirely, or is just dead. at any rate, merletta married a wealthy business man whom she had waited on consistently at the local diner, one of her three jobs. unlike so many people, he was a genuinely nice person who truly loved merletta and her children. he moved the small family into a big house across town, and despite the fact that he travels a lot, he's never been anything but kind to merletta and colby and cambria, making a point to provide for them and care for them, taking colby and cambria on as if they were his own.
in the big house across town, there was a piano, and several abandoned beginners piano books, and a few old hymnals. from these, the twelve year old colby taught himself to play the piano. a year later, michael, his stepfather, came home to hear him playing and immediately got him into piano lessons.
from there, colby only grew, and by the time he was sixteen and came of age to come to Bouscher, he was extremely good, and since coming here, he has only improved.
in appearance, he's a fairly tall kid, six feet exactly, of a slim but well muscled build. his eyes are green and his hair dirty diswater blond, and curly if he lets it grow out, which is his usual style. his hands are long, a typical pianist's hands. as soon as his eighteenth birthday rolled around, he picked up a couple tattoos. his first was a cross on the right side of his chest. the second was what goes around comes around on his right bicep, then two small hearts on his right wrist. (he's partial to his right side, apparently.) all except for his sister's name (cambria) in this font across his left shoulder blade.
he's one of those guys who comes off as being a real jerk, but it's simply that he doesn't relate very well to people. if anybody takes half a second to get to know him, it doesn't take long to figure out that he's just a big old teddy bear who's a wee bit socially awkward. he'd shoot his own foot if he thought it would help someone he cared about, and he's just generally an extremely loyal guy, the kind who's always there for everyone.
