derrick is obviously of german descent. he has a strong, square jaw, and just has that look about him. he always wears the best clothing, and is always trendy. his hair is often messy but has that styled messy look. he carries himself with poise and grace, which comes from being a dancer. his blue eyes shine with life and playfulness.

derrick is the happy go lucky, positive, happy type. he hardly lets anything get him down. it comes from his parents, and his rough upbringing, he had to work for everything he has, and his parents as well. andy is always smiling, and always thinking positive things. he knows his moods effect his dancing. he lives for dancing, it is whole life. everything revolves around his dancing. if he has a bad day dancing, he will become irritable, or snippy, which is in deep contrast with his normal mood. but that's how much dancing affects him.
derrick is also strong-willed, and always strives to be the best, and can be described as a perfectionist. if he doesn't get something right, he tries until he gets it right. and he never gives up. it isn't in his dna to give up. he knows if he fails, there will be 5 other guys behind him, waiting to take his place. as a dancer, you are disposable, easily replaced.
he tends to keep to himself, hardly venturing out to find other things, after all, how could there be anything he likes more than dancing? and he hardly goes out with anyone, which sometime hurts him, but friends come and go, dancing will always stay. he keeps his emotions to himself, his problems, everything. but derrick is also extremely passionate and loving. he is a romantic, and is always seeking love.
he has a need to be loved, and feel appreciated, which his perfectionist streak stems from. he feels if he does everything perfectly, everyone will love him. and he has the strange need to fit in and blend in. which is rather hard being a male dancer. but he doesn't care. he doesn't really talk about dancing with other people. they have made fun of him before, calling him rude names, and shunning him from their group. it's better if hardly anyone knows.

derrick james hirsch was born in germany to augustine and adela. his father, augustine, was, and still is, a well respected doctor. his mother just recently started selling insurance, when they moved to the states. the road to the united states was a rough and difficult one. augustine and adela were working on leaving germany before derrick was born. and they hadn't expected it to be so difficult. adela had no family left, she had been an orphan, and augustine's family was very rich, but wanted no part in their marriage, they thought augustine should have better, not some poor girl he met on the street. but augustine was working as a doctor in the town's small hospital. the pay wasn't very good, but it was enough to pay the bills and get enough money for america.
then they found out adela was pregnant with their first child. a boy, derrick. the two new parents couldn't have been more excited at the news. they began preparing for their child, turning the spare bedroom into a nursery, painting it blue. adela painted a small mural on one of the walls, she was a very gifted painter. then their son was born on a clear, crisp january morning. augustine was proud of everything derrick did, from his first words, to his first step. adela was glad to finally see the worry wrinkles on her husband's forehead disappear. america seemed to be the furthest thing from their mind at the moment. then derrick grew up with a strong pull towards the arts, dance, music, poetry. adela, against augustine's wishes, entered him in some dance classes; tap, jazz, and ballet. he excelled in ballet, and loved it. it became his passion.
derrick lived for dance. but his parent's knew they couldn't stay in german much longer. augustine wasn't getting any raises in his pay, and they hadn't lost site of america in their dreams. so they set off for a better life, and more opportunities. when derrick turned 6, they hopped on a flight, and set off to america, where augustine had a job lined up, with help from the hospital in germany. they lived in a small apartment in new york, where derrick attended more dance classes, but mostly ballet. and his mother became pregnant with a little girl. but there were some complications, and adela's baby was a still born. derrick had been devastated. he had looked forward to being a big brother, and saw how it affected both his parents. so he threw himself into dancing. he didn't hang out with friends, and he strived to be the best he could be. derrick didn't want to give his parents even more disappointment by failing. then it came time for him to go to college, and his school suggested bouscher academy of the arts. and was accepted.
this is where his journey begins. derrick loves dance more than anything. but will he get so lost in being perfect that it soon becomes a job and no longer the thing that brings him joy?
