Ryan Kate Berkley ! A feminine voice would sigh with content. She could feel spring break on her finger tips, taste it on the tip of her tongue. Yes, during spring break she'd become very familiar with this dingy shack. The rotting wood disgusted others, but she found comfort in the smell of ocean salt and old surfing boards. Ryan was alone at the moment- not like that came as much of a surprise to her. It wasn't that she was hated, or lame, she chose to stay away from other humans. She already had to deal with her own imperfections- why should she have to deal with anyone else's?
~* my faith in you was fadin'. *~
She lay on her board, which lay in the sand. Her legs outstretched across the board, and ending in the sand. Her toes tickled the sand-small, single pieces sticking to the heels of her feet. Seeing how beautiful the ocean looked at sunset made her think of Malcom. She loved staring into his leafy green eyes, and not knowing what to expect. He was so surprising sometimes, always painting a smile across her face. He didn't just make her forget reality, he made her feel good about herself. The way he talked about her figure.. it was like talking about a goddess. He loved her legs, long and tan. Ryan could remember him saying his favorite part about her was her smile. He would make up the most ridiculous jokes just to see that pretty glow. And then Ryan would snap back to reality, swearing to herself and running a hand through her hair. Malcom was no longer a paragraph in her fairty tale. ~* i love you and that's all i really know. *~
Waves, big waves. They'd be coming soon, and Ryan Berkley would ride them like a horse. Experienced with surfing, she'd spent many summers coming down to this tiny hut and camping out. It'd be Malcom and her, but it never felt weird that they were together. It felt.. well, it felt right. When they'd been dating, Malcom and Ryan would come out here all the time together. He was much taller than her, and her most fondest memory was getting on her tip-toes just to dance and sway with him in the moonlight. Of course, she wasn't here for Malcom. She wasn't even here to think about Malcom. I haven't said she doesn't miss him, mind you. Ryan misses him more than the lightning bugs miss darkness when it's day time. She assumes he's moved on, no longer having time for old high school sweat hearts. ~* all theres left to do is run. *~
Her brows coming together to portray frustration she let out a small growl. Ryan grabbed her board fiercely. She'd sprint across the beach, hovering her body ontop the board in mid-air and gliding into the ice cold water with grace. Her legs moving on either side of the board naturally, she'd sit on the board. Ryan let the water carry her, the waves nice and gentle. One thing was for sure, she never wanted to see Malcom again. Once upon a time, maybe, but in reality.. there is no happy endings. ~* it's a love story, baby just say yes. *~

both hands in the pockets of his swim trunks, his shirt slung over his shoulder, his bare feet moving through the sand in a way that only those who had spent almost every day of their walking-life on the sand could manage. whistling the theme song to firefly, having spent the morning watching an episode. he missed that show, but at least it had ended in a way that did justice to the series. it was the one thing that he was genuinely a geek about.
the spring day was gorgeous to be out here, it also made him genuinely miss ryan; she would have loved this weather, probably been out here with a board, hoping to catch the perfect wave. but alas, she was in tennessee, he didn't even know if she was intending to come back to ehu after the way they had left things the previous september. studying some of the faces that were already on the beach, he recognised maybe 70 percent of them, either from the bar or from school, or even just from the island itself. the other thirty percent must have been tourists.
walking past the surf shop, he hesitated, his green eyes peering out into the ocean. tilting his head, he squinted into the sun at a girl on a surf board, her blonde hair bright in the sunlight. rubbing his eyes, he shook his head, maybe one of his sisters had stuck some sort of alcohol in his breakfast that morning, he was just completely drunk, yeah, that was a good reason to be seeing ryan out there on the ocean. striding over to the surf shack, he placed his palms on the counter, leaning over to eye the guy who was running it that day, sitting on the ground with a laptop in his hand. hey, did you rent a board to a ryan berkley? or even see a girl with that name?
the kid jumped, scrambling to his feet only to realise there was no need to be jumping anywhere. r-ryan berkley? oh, yeah, the blonde out there on a board. creasing his brow, mal turned back around before trotting across the sand and planting himself at just a random spot, crossing his arms on his knees, he watched the girl who had stollen his heart and then left it battered and bruised at the end of the summer. what are you doing here, ryan? he asked no one in particular, just trying to wrap his mind around the fact that she was here. in march. in the water in front of him. Ryan Kate Berkley ! and then there was that feeling. she'd always gotten the strange sensation whenever she was near malcom. like, a radar of some sort. she could always pick him out of a crowd. she'd turn around on the board only to see a crowd of people. not too much out of the ordinary, but a closer glance would reveal a man. this man would stare at her, gawk at her. he was young, his features similar to those of malcom's. too far away to tell that it was him, she waved to the stranger- putting on her most welcoming and brightest smile. '' WELL HEY THERE STRANGER, YOU LIKE SOMETHING YOU SEE? '' She'd have to holler to him, making people stare at her. In Tennesse it was nothing but smiles, and waves. Everyone knew everyone, there was no hiding.
She paddled to shore, making sure the board didn't touch the rough surface when the water got shallow enough. she gave a signal to the boy sitting behind the counter, indicating she was still going to take the board at after awhile. He'd blush, and she'd give him a smile- only making his cheeks go brighter. ah, boys. malcom had never been shy around her, like i said.. they felt good when around each other.. they felt at home. She held the board on her hip, walking her way to the stranger who'd wanted her attention. '' hi, there. i'm ryan berkl- '' she hadn't even finished her sentence, because when she looked into those eyes she mentally crumbled. she stood in shock, not being able to move.

her breathing became short inhales and exhales, the water that was on her body suddenly feeling like ice. her teeth clattered, and that's when she noticed the wind. it was cold and bellowing- how had she not noticed it when she was out there? shivering and shaking, she gave the boy who had broken her heart one final glare and stomped off to get her towel. how dare he come here when she was here. how dare he... how dare he want to go to the beach. and how dare he take her heart away. he never left her brain, and she never stopped thinking about him. his cute, baby face. his charming expressions. the always warm glow. ~* all theres left to do is run. *~
her hips swung as she tried to move quickly, lady-like, to the shack. growling at the boy who had done nothing wrong, she shoved the board at him. '' here, i'm done for the day. '' he looked at her innocently and gestured towards malcom. '' you're leaving so soon? the guy just got here. '' she looked where his hand was, and sure enough it was pointing at malcom. she shook her head in confusion and pressed her fingers gently on the desk. '' and that matters.. because... ? '' the boy laughed, as if he knew all about love. '' he asked about you, then stormed off just like you did when you saw his face. you guys know each other or somethin'? '' she gave a loud grunt, and moved her way back to malcom. getting close enough to smell his cologne she moved her open palm to his face, aiming at his cheek in a slap. '' i can't believe you. i can't believe you'd come all the way here just because you knew I was here. '' but the truth was, he hadn't come here for her. he didn't even know she was in town. she just wanted to believe he'd come all the way here to see her. ~* it's a love story, baby just say yes. *~

watching as ryan turned around on her board, their eyes locked for a moment, or at least he figured they did. well hey there stranger, you like something you see?
yes, yes he did. but it was very much along the lines of a hand-crafted grand piano, he loved it, but he couldn't have it. running his hand through his hair, he waved at her, the only thing he could bring himself to do. watching as she paddled her way into shore, he got to his feet, brushing the sand off his legs. hi, there. i'm ryan berkl- giving her a questioning half-smile, he felt his heart plummet into his feet when she stormed away. not being able to bring himself to watch her, he continued to watch the ocean, the place where she had been ryan, the place where she had looked at him like he mattered. here, i'm done for the day. he heard her say, he could picture her tossing the board at the poor shmuck who was running the shack today. you're leaving so soon? the guy just got here. hunched shouldered, malcom shifted his foot around in the sand, the picture of innocence. and that matters.. because... ? shaking his head, he picked the shirt off the sand where it had fallen, figuring that it would probably be in his best interest to start walking. he asked about you, then stormed off just like you did when you saw his face. you guys know each other or somethin'? way to go genius, you've figured out the mystery of the universe. here, have a prize. he thought to himself bitterly. turning when he heard footsteps, he peered down his nose at ryan. she hadn't changed much over the past few months, her hair was wet because of the ocean and there was some sand on her shoulder, but beyond that, she looked just the same. yet, he still found himself half-examining her, checking to make sure she wasn't injured or something ridiculous like that. he'd always been like this, especially when it came to ryan, whom he pretty much wanted to put on a pedestal. and then she slapped him, the sting going all the way to his teeth. yup. it was definitely ryan. out of instinct, he grabbed her wrist, not hard, but restraining. i can't believe you. i can't believe you'd come all the way here just because you knew i was here. now he was on the defensive, not mad, just not about to go down without fighting. yes, because i was completely informed that you were even here, ryan. he practically growled it, his light green eyes flashing. nice to see you too. he remarked sarcastically. dropping her wrist, he just looked at her, now completely convinced that she truly was here. why are you here, ry, your aunt didn't say anything when i saw her a week or so ago. rubbing his cheek, he shifted his jaw around. he would definitely have a bruise there in the morning, it still felt like it was being attacked by a bunch of little needles.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Ryan Kate Berkley ! and then anything that hurt inside was now healed. she let a small smile dance across her face as she looked towards the water. '' I moved here, aunt and uncle let me move here. i even go to that fancy school you go to. '' she nodded her head, as if that would explain everything. ryan would kneel down, and then drop to the sand beside him. wiping off sand that stuck to her legs, she crossed her legs and pushed her hands into the small circle her legs made. she brought her hand to her eyes, shielding them from the blinding sun. '' i told her not to talk to you. ''
~* my faith in you was fadin'. *~
ryan fiddled with a piece of her curly blond hair, anything to make the silence not seem so awkward. she was never one to hate anyone, and certainly not her one and only love- malcom. she brought her soft, pink palm to the cheek she'd only moments ago made red. caressing the skin with her palm, she let her index finger and thumb grab hold of his chin. she turned his head to face her, making him look into her eyes. '' same old malcom, same beautiful eyes. '' she wasn't telling him, but merely noting the obvious to herself. ~* i love you and that's all i really know. *~
ryan dared herself to kiss those tender lips, their redness tempting her. but no, dismissing the thought, she let her hand fall back to her thigh- turning her head away from him. she made sure his gaze didn't fall back onto him, whispering so softly her gentle voice was barely audible. '' you deserved that slap, mal, the way you treated me. you deserved more, but i don't ever start a fight with a clenched fist. '' after making this statement she looked at him, her eyes trying to tell him everything she couldn't bring herself to say. she wanted him so badly, she wanted to kiss him, cuddle with him. she wanted to do things tons of other girls probably got to do with him while she was away. ~* all theres left to do is run. *~
'' i've been seein' this boy back in tennesse. you know, i'm givin' up a lot just to be here. but i sure did miss this place. i missed a lot about this place. '' if he didn't catch onto the hint in her last sentence, she probably would've cried in frustration. of course, the sentence was a lie- all but the last part, because she really did miss this place. she hadn't been seeing a boy. and she didn't say it to make him jealous. she said it to try and convince herself that she wasn't lonely. while he was off making kissy faces to other girls.. she did nothing but catch some waves and hang in the sun. so maybe, just maybe, having a close relationship wouldn't be so bad. even if it wasn't malcom. ~* it's a love story, baby just say yes. *~

seeing the smile creep across her beautiful face, malcom relaxed, he knew that tensions would be high with them, it would be insane if they weren't. i moved here, aunt and uncle let me move here. i even go to that fancy school you go to.
but when he commented that he had seen her aunt, her response did surprise him. i told her not to talk to you. flinching slightly, he nodded, that explained the apologetic look that she had given him. hesitantly, he sat down beside her, resuming his position from earlier; legs bent at the knee in front of him, arms resting on the knees, green eyes staring out at the ocean. turning his mint-green eyes onto her, he smiled, watching as she played with a strand of her hair. welcome to the island then. but i actually graduated, now i tend the bar at the rastafa. he didn't know why he said the last part, but it was out there now. same old malcom, same beautiful eyes. this remark caught him off guard, but it was the look in her eyes, the look that was not quite needing, but there was a desire in it, one he'd seen the first time they'd kissed. you deserved that slap, mal, the way you treated me. you deserved more, but i don't ever start a fight with a clenched fist. closing his eyes for a moment, he reigned in the flare of his temper that brought around. i have very little doubt on that. . . he murmured, laying down in the sand, he wanted to hug her, just pull her to his chest to prove that she was in fact real. hence the laying down, simply to put some distance between their faces. i've been seein' this boy back in tennesse. you know, i'm givin' up a lot just to be here. but i sure did miss this place. i missed a lot about this place. smiling up at her, simply to humour her, he waved his hand in the air, motioning at the island. as you can tell, the island missed you. it even gave you some welcome-back weather. he paused for a moment, peering at the blonde with those minty eyes. as for the boy, he couldn't help but feel a little guilty about the number of women and teens that he had either made out with in the bar or fooled around with. even when he was with ryan, he'd flirted with girls all the time, he'd never done it to get with any of them, mainly because he was so bad at it, but mainly because that was what you expected the handsome bartender to do. it charmed the tourists and made the locals laugh. i'm happy for you. maybe he'll send you some of those toe-y socks you love so much as a house-warming gift. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

Ryan Kate Berkley ! one of ryan's ever-so-perfect eyebrows rose in an arch of curiosity. A small smile, not as big as she intended on it being but pretty just the same, crept onto her face. '' you're kidding, right? malcom levi james, graduating from high school. who would've guessed? '' a teasing glance brightened her features and she gave him a small, playful punch on the shoulder. She remembered him adding more to that statement, something about a job. '' why, you giving me out the name of the bar and everything makes me start to think you want me to visit you sometime. and, you might as well come clean- because i know those jobs are for nobody but the beautiful. how many numbers you got saved in that phone, malcom? you can't lie to your best friend. '' she wasn't serious, only teasing, she hardly expected him to answer the question.
~* my faith in you was fadin'. *~
~* i love you and that's all i really know. *~
the sunset, awful timing for it too. because, however much she loved malcom, she wasn't ready for another relationship with him- her heart was still healing. and the waves were starting to come in heavy too. they always seemed to come in when everyone was gone. she wasn't going to miss her chance on these, they were the only things that haven't let her down so far. brushing her hair out of her eyes awkwardly, she gave him a not-so huge smile. '' well, malcom, i'd love to stay and chat.. but, the waves.. ''. ~* all theres left to do is run. *~
she couldn't hear much, she didn't even turn to see if malcom was watching her. sitting on her board she gave herself time to relax. listening carefully she heard the faintest.. squeal? whipping her head around so fast she felt a headache coming on, she was delighted to see Dare. Dare was her cute and passionate Royal Dandy pig. The biggest smile you can even imagine slipped across her face and she made baby sounds to the pig, cooeing at her. '' come her, dare. come here baby! that's my girl, come here. '' clapping her hands together she watched the pig jump into the cold, mucky water and swim out to her. she'd had the pig since she was little, but she highly doubted malcom remembered her. But Dare obviously remembered him by the happy squeals she was making towards him, too hyper to sit still on the board. ryan loved when it was just her and dare alone in the ocean, but she always had room for company- especially when malcom was an option. ~* it's a love story, baby just say yes. *~

watching as the girl raised an eyebrow, setting her eyes on him at his remark about graduating. you're kidding, right? malcom levi james, graduating from high school. who would've guessed?
sticking his tongue out at her, he nodded, stretching his feet out in the sand. yes, smart-alek, i graduated. when she playfully punched his shoulder, he feigned being wounded. it was times like this that he enjoyed being around ryan, where things were as natural as breathing. why, you giving me out the name of the bar and everything makes me start to think you want me to visit you sometime. and, you might as well come clean- because i know those jobs are for nobody but the beautiful. how many numbers you got saved in that phone, malcom? you can't lie to your best friend. to tell the truth, he didn't have any numbers saved in his phone, at least none of that nature. sure, he got a fair few of them a week, written on napkins or something of the sort, but he never kept them. it was easy, i just showed up and they hired me on the spot. he drawled sarcastically, closing his eyes and just relaxing in the sand. there were many a nights where he truly had fallen asleep out here, he just loved the beach. well, malcom, i'd love to stay and chat.. but, the waves.. opening his eyes, he spied her smile, bringing an almost sad look into his eyes. pushing himself so that he was sitting, he watched as she collected her board and headed out into the water. he stayed sitting like that for a moment, until he saw the pig galloping across the sand. come her, dare. come here baby! that's my girl, come here when he heard ryan say this, he was able to put two and two together, even though he'd never really interacted with the pig in the last few years, he at least knew of her. getting to his feet, he sighed, brushing the sand off of his back and out of his hair. taking a few steps forward until his feet were in the water, he just watched her, half-tempted to join her, but he had the feeling that would be overstepping his bounds. so instead, he just stood there, his arms crossed over his bare chest, just watching as the pig swam out to her master on the surfboard. Ryan Kate Berkley ! the last thing she remembered was watching Macolm, still able to see his neon green eyes standing on the shore. ryan waved her hand to and fro, trying to get his attention. she wanted him to come out here with her, whether he surfed or not. and, in all the years they had been together- she never did much surfing when around him. because she never really wanted to be classifed as a tomboy, she only wanted to be a girl to him. well, more than just a girl, but you know what i mean.
~* my faith in you was fadin'. *~
~* i love you and that's all i really know. *~
and then there was a splash, ryan hadn't noticed how much they had waded out.. and by the time she did, it was too late. dare was sinking.. fast. she must've jumped in to swim to malcom, ryan assumed. she didn't realize how deep this water really was, like ryan didn't. too shocked to think of anything better- ryan dived in after her. she wasn't going to let dare leave her, not now.. ~* all theres left to do is run. *~
ryan didn't want to scare anyone, so she tried going as fast as possible to get dare. of course, by the time ryan was way down in the water- losing air fast, the pig had already swam back up and hopped back up on the board- squealing urgently for ryan. but where was ryan? she knew something was wrong when she started feeling light-headed, but she didn't realize how quickly things would go down hill from that. being light-headed meant she couldn't hold her air in, and it all escaped her red lips in large bubbles. ryan assumed this would be the end of her story, not even getting the happy ending she so desperately needed. in her assumed last moments ryan thought about malcom.. what she would say to him if she ever did see him again, which was highly unlikely. and when she finally told herself in her mind that she loved him, her eyes rolled back, closed, and ryan was sinking slowly to the bottom. she was unconscious, so it wasn't like she could save herself. it was only a matter of time until she was completely invisible to everyone- which wasn't very new for her. ~* it's a love story, baby just say yes. *~

malcom breathed in the fresh salty air, feeling the air blow across him, wiggling his toes in the odd-feeling sand. blinking his mint-coloured eyes at the sunset, he smiled, it wasn't even a particularly happy smile, just a simple smile. running his hand through his hair, he muttered when he felt sand in it still. . . he was beginning to believe that people who were born on this island just had sand already in their skin and hair. . . it was inevitable.
scanning the ocean for ryan, his stomach plummeted into his feet when he didn't see her; just her empty board. ryan?! he called, thinking maybe she was just pulling some silly prank on him. until he saw the pig claw her way back onto the board, soaking wet and squealing. brow creasing, he started running, as much as one could in water that was steadily getting deeper. pretty much every high school local had worked as some form of lifeguard at some point in their career, if anything so that they could watch girls in bikinis, malcom, though, did not. he attended all of the classes, but never actually went out and got a job doing it. ryan! he called again, the water almost up to his waist.
a few more steps and he felt the ledge where the sandbar immediately plunged the ocean into deeper waters, kicking off of that, the man dove into the waves, blinking his eyes against the salty sting. scanning the murky waters for any sign of the girl, he spotted her blonde hair, floating around her as she sank. swimming down towards her, he wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her up to the surface. kicking the few feet that the board had drifted, he latched one arm around it, hoisting her up as much as he could. c'mon ry, you're safe, i've got you.
he murmured, already starting to kick them out of the deeper waters and towards shore. looking into the nose of a pig was not the way he would have liked to spend that time, but it was how it ended up. you're finally getting your titanic moment here, ryan. he joked, his arm still securely wrapped around her waist, holding her right against his side.[/blockquote][/blockquote]
