born to two italian-americans who owned a small chain of casinos in nevada, aspen martinelli never saw much of her two constantly busy parents. she grew up pretty well off, normally getting what she asked for, but her parents kept strict control of her money supply. eventually, aspen learned the trait of being manipulative to get her way with her parents. she never really asked them for anything directly, but instead walked around what she wanted and sent them the strongest hints. she eventually noticed that her parents didn't show very much love for her. all her mother was concerned about was whether or not aspen looked "pretty" enough for any formal dinners she had to attend, and her father barely concerned himself with aspen at all. when she was a teenager, aspen frequently wondered why they even had a child. most of aspen's childhood, her mother didn't take care of her but instead pawned her off to nannies and babysitters. aspen shared a closer bond with her nannies than her own parents.
her parents' busiest times were the holidays, and it was rare for aspen to see them during christmastime. instead, they occasionally shipped her off to one of her relatives' houses for christmas, where she was greeted with an unfamiliar feeling of love and fed with five-course, home-cooked meals until she couldn't button her jeans. aspen martinelli loved this unfamiliar italian lifestyle. not once could she remember her mother or father slaving themselves to make a family dinner. in fact, many of the times she had trouble remembering when the last time she ate with her parents were. she quickly became addicted to the italian culture, eventually persuading her parents to let her stay summers with her extended family. it was during those summers and vacations that aspen actually felt loved.
especially with her partially italian american upbringing, aspen has a love of food. she can't get enough of it. when she lived with her parents, on the rare occasions they saw her at dinner, aspen's mother would comment on her weight and how aspen would have to do something about it. hurt by her mother's unkind words and not willing to give up her love of food, aspen started puking after most meals.
still, her parents' neglect wasn't completely negative. at an early age, aspen learned how to fend for herself and become independent. her parents sent her off to ojai boarding school in ojai, california when she was thirteen, where she picked up her love for taking pictures. aspen joined the school's newspaper crew as a photographer and her parents sent her expensive cameras and lenses as her birthday and christmas presents. she was always grateful, but would have always appreciated a visit more. still, aspen never complained. growing up, her nanny always told her "don't fuss, dear; get on with it." eventually, she learned that ella van heemstra had said that to her daughter, audrey, too. her nanny was aspen's best friend, who also homeschooled aspen until she was sent off to boarding school. thanks to her nanny, aspen learned never to complain and to show others the stronger part of her. if she is ever feeling down or insulted, aspen has a good way of hiding it until she's in private. even then, aspen rarely cries.
aspen barely had any friends growing up, and so when she attended ojai it was hard for her to make them. she's very distant at first and somewhat unwilling to believe that people want to befriend her without having a reason behind it. eventually, she learned to overcome it. though she doesn't immediately trust a person with her secrets and fears, she is friendly to everyone she first meets. aspen tries not to judge people, and in return doesn't care for what people think of her. she no longer cares what her parents think, so why should anyone else's opinion of her matter? aspen has a general "i don't give a fuck" attitude and is quite unladylike.
two years ago, she was looking at pamphlets as she waited outside her counselor's office. one happened to be bouscher academy of the arts, and it happened to have an amazing photography program. aspen phoned her parents immediately, leaving a voicemail about how much she just would love to go to that school. aspen applied right after, and called her parents again to help her book her flight to ehu island for an interview. the person interviewing her was impressed with her photography, but not of the subjects. aspen was scared she wouldn't get in because most of her photos were only of the horses at ojai academy. however, something must have been right in his heart because she received her letter of acceptance only three weeks later.
since moving to ehu island, aspen has gained a reputation of the island's best supplier when it comes to mary jane. her parents are very strict when it comes to cash, so this is her way of making it on her own.
